       John Holmes was known to be in Plymouth, before 16 October 1632. He bought a house and six acres of land from William Palmer. He was admitted into the freedom of the Plymouth colony on 1 January 164. John Holmes is mentioned in the Plymouth Colony Records vol.. XII p. 19. To have indentured William Spooner on 27 March 1637, and transferred Spooner’s indenture to 1 July 1637. He was messenger of the Government on 4 December 1638. He served as summons server, jailer, and executioner.

     Probate record for the estate of John Holmes: [1: 347: OS Docket #10,466 contain the agreement/settlement.] The agreement for settlement of the estate of John Holmes, late of Plymouth, dated 29 September 1700, was made to John Holmes of Plymouth in ye County of Plymouth in New England, eldest son, who was to pay a yearly sum to the widow, Patience Holmes, for life as her dower, and make full payment to each of the said children [of the deceased], that is to say: to Nathaniel, Ebenezer, Thomas, Joseph, and Desire, wife of John Churchill, who were of age to sign for themselves and to Richard, Patience, Mehitable, Sarah and George, who were minors. The agreement was signed on 29 September 1701 by the mark of Patience Holmes for herself and her minor children, the mark of George Bonum, Jr. in behalf of Richard, Thomas Holmes, Nathaniel Holmes, Joseph Holmes, tand he mark of Desire Churchill, John Churchill and John Holmes.

        Thomas Lucas was first in Plymouth Colony records on 27 June 1650 in a list of townsmen. He is not found in the court records before that. He is found in the Plymouth Colony Court Orders 3 February 1656. He was listed 25 times and 16 of the were for drunkenness. “He even presented himself in Court distempered with drinke and reviled the magistrates.” The first time they were very lenient but later he was publicly whipped, put in the stocks, finally sentenced to prison for 24 hours. “He was also presented 'for abusing his children and wife to her danger' and placed under bonds for good behavior.” On 1 June 1675 records show: “Thomas Lucas for being distempered with drinke, it being soe oftens, and that hee hath borne severall pticular punishments gradually, and can not be reclaimed, it was ordered concerning him, that all that sell drinke be stricktly ordered and prohibited to lett him have none” (Plymouth Col. Court Orders 5: 169). At the Court held 8 Mar 1678/9: “The sixt day of January, 1678, being warned upon a jury to view the body of Thomas Lucase, of Plymouth, deceased, and to make inquiry how hee came by his end, wee, whose names are under written, find it as followeth: hee being very ancient & decriped in his limbes and it being very cold, and haveing drunk some drinke, gott a violent fall into a ditch, in a very dangerous place, could not recover himselfe, but bruised his body, and lying all night in the cold, soe hee came by his end” (Plymouth Col, Court Orders 6: 7-8).
      Thomas was a blacksmith by trade and there are not mention to the name of his wife. It is assumed he was married about 1655. In the settlement of his estate she was living and it was settled in 1679.


Plymouth Colony Court. Orders 6:5, 8 Mar 1678/9:
"From the settlement of the estate, 'the widow shall have free use of the housing and lands until her sones come of age, and then her thirds of the benefits during her natural life and the sume of L38 of movables ... and use of the whole until the children come to their respective ages or marriages; Benonie, the eldest son, the house and half the garden plott, halfe the barn, three acrees meaddow and grant of four acrees excepting his mother's thirds and the sum of L11.6 in personal estate; Mary Lucas and Bethya Lucas each L12 and Mehitable Lucas L10.”

      Pierre Gagnon was born in Le Gagnonnierre, Perche, France. He was baptized at the church of Saint-Aubin, Tourouvre, Perche, France. Around 1640, Pierre with his two brothers, Mathurin and Jean, and a cousin Robert travel to Quebec to join their sister who had already traveled over with her husband, Eloi Tavernier. Their widowed mother, Renee Roger, also joins them.



     For several years the brothers bought and established farms along the coast of Bowspirit between Castle- Richer and Sainte- Anne. During the winter months they would move to Quebec where they also became traders. On 14 August 1651, they bought land along the Lower City. On 6 October 1658, they bought a store.


     His was a land grant of 6.5 arpents on the river by 126 arpents deep. On 13 May 1657, he ceded a half arpent of his land to Nicholas Lebel, bordering that of Jean Cachon, Jr. He took it back 29 December 1668.

      Pierre was baptised on 17 September 1790 at Ste-Anne de la Pocatière, Québec. His godparents were François Pelletier and Marie François Gauvin.When he married in 1813 present as witnesses were Michel Gagnon (Prospère's father), Dignale Roi, Ignace Lavoie, Jr, Etienne Tardif, and Antoine Ouellette (Marie Anne's father), Alexandre Tardif, Jean Baptiste Cayouette, François Ouellet, "and several other relatives and friends of the bride and groom. In the children's baptismal records, he is listed as a "forgeron," or blacksmith. Prospère and his family appeared in the 1825 Census of Lower Canada, as Prospère Gagnon, living in Trois Pistoles in a household with 3 children under the age of 6, and two between the age of 6 and 14; one married male 25-40; and one married female 14-45.


     Then in 1831, summer, the family moved again to the upper St. John River Valley, now known as Frenchville. By 1833 Prospere shows up in the New Brunswick, Canada. That year the New Brunswick provincial census taken at that time lists Prospere, his wife and five of his children (3 sons and 2 daughters). At that time they had no livestock, did no sow and raise crops and were living as tenants. Prospere was described as a laborer, needing assistance and there was a note that the family"requires almost immediate relief." Prospere's siblings had all moved to the area.


     In the 1840 US Census of Madawaska settlements south of St. John River, Aroostock, Maine, Prosper is in the household with the following: 1 make between 40 and 49; 1 male between 20-29; 1 male between 15-19; 1 female between 60-70; 1 female between 30-40; 1 female between 20-30.
Prospère died on 11 Aug 1847 in Frenchville, Maine, and was buried on 12 Aug 1847 in Ste-Luce Cemetery, Frenchville, Maine. The burial record is in the Ste-Luce parish register (1847, p.93a). "August 12th 1847 we buried in the cemetery of this place the body of Prospère Gagnon, deceased yesterday at the age of 55 years, husband of Marie Anne Ouellet of this parish. Present were Hilarion Daigle and Joseph Albert, who did not know how to sign. H Dionne, priest"


Note: In November 1833 the Provincial government of New Brunswick undertook a census of the Madawaska Settlement, which was going through a very difficult time: crops had failed and a large part of the population were very bad off. New Brunswick decided to find out what kinds of assistance were needed and how much, so they surveyed the population, asking not only the number of people in each household but also how much livestock they had, how much and which crops had been sown and harvested in that year and in previous years.

     Michel was baptized 13 December 1814 at St. Louis Church, Kamouraska, Québec, Canada. His godfather was Michel Gagnon and his godmother was Claire Morin. He moved from Kamouraska to the Madawaska region with his parents, brothers and sisters in about the summer of 1831, at the age of 16. He was not listed in the same household as his parents in the 1840 census. He was most likely at the  household of his father-in-law Michel Thibodeau, along with his wife Marie-Anne Thibodeau at Madawaska, New Brunswick Canada. The first few children were baptised at St. Basile's Parish, Madawaska, New Brunswick, Canada. Daughters Modeste and Marie Rose were baptised in 1845 and 1846 at St. Luce's Parish, Madawaska, Aroostock, ME

The most difficult task was to assign dates of births to all of the children. I have looked over vital records that I could obtain and combined them with charts sent by different Gagnon family members.
