     John Howard and his brother George (James) came from England, settled in Duxbury and were among those able to bear arms 1643. John was about 15 when he came to Duxbury and lived in the family of Captain Myles Standish who came from Shorely, Lancashire, England. John  removed to Bridgewater and was one of the original settlers and proprietors of the town. He was one of fourteen whose allotment of land was in the easterly section of town. He was a man of influence in the new plantation.

      In 1645 his name appears as one of the original 54 Planters in 1656 he was 1 of 2 surveyors of highways of town 1657 took Freeman's oath; May 1676 was on King Philip's War. Ensign John Howard and twenty others fought with some Indians, took 17 alive with much plunder. All returned without serious injury. On 5 January 1678 he was deputy to the General Court and appointed selectman of Bridgewater at same time. On 2 October 1689 he received a commission as Lieutenant. He was carpenter by trade. He spelled his name Haward and descendants did until 1700.

       He lived in a house he built near the first meeting house. It stood directly north of the house where B.B. Howard lived on the corner of Howard and River Streets. This was the first public house in Bridgewater, and he was licensed to keep an Ordinary or Tavern as early as 1670 and it is remarkable that a public house has been kept there by his descendants for over  151 years. The house was taken down in 1838. When he died in 1700, the property was appraised at 840 pounds and consisted of 450 acres of land.

     He was representative to the General Court in 1723. He inherited from his father the land on where he house stood, now the location of the Howard Seminary.

     Mary Keith "was courted by Ephraim Howard, not much to the acceptance of the old minister [Rev. James Keith, who, in 1688, was all of 45]. Notwithstanding his objection they were secretly married, and were pursued by the irate father. Arriving too late to prevent their marriage, he returned, and, complying with the prevailing custom, preached the following Sabbath from Hosea 4:17-"Ephraim is joined to idols let him alone." Time, however, softened his spirit, and the reconciliation which followed inclined him to preach from Jeremiah 31:20-"Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For since I spake against him I do earnestly remember him still".
Keith, Ziba, "Genealogy of the Keith family," Brockton, MA: Goodall, 1889. p. 13-14

Generation Three:
Ephraim Howard b. 25 March 1697 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; m. 1722 Abigail Tisdale at Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA;
Their Children:
1. George b. 31 January 1722 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; m. 29 August 1745 Abigail Copeland at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; d. 3 April 1815 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA, aged 93 years

4. Abigail b. 18 November 1733 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; m. 19 October 1752 Edward Lathrop at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA;
5. Susanna b. 14 May 1736 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; m. 12 July 1759 John Ames at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; d.  11 January 1821 at East Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA, aged 84 years
7. Martha b. 7 February 1739 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; m.1 September 1757 Nathan Willis; d. 27 March 1792 at Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA, aged 53 years
8. Mary b. 4 May 1741 at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA; m. 2 December 1762 David Lathrop at West Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA;

Abigail inherited thirty pounds from her father's estate. After her father's death, her mother moved to West Bridgewater to live with Abigail until her death in 1727. From her mother, Abigail received one-third of the wearing apparel of her grandmother Mary (Watson) Leonard, miscellaneous household items and money (some of it to be given to her dead sisters' children) and with the stipulation that she quit her
interest in her father's wearing apparel. In these colonial times wearing apparel was an important item, for its disposal is mentioned in many wills and inventories. The coats that the colonists exchanged for land from the Indians were not such a cheap price to pay as persons today deem them. Abigail married Ephraim Howard (or Hayward, as it appears in some sources), the son of Ephraim Howard of Bridgewater, who was born in 1697. He was the grandson of John Howard (Hayward) who was brought up by Miles Standish and became his right-hand man. Ephraim was a representative to the General Court in 1723.
Abigail and Ephraim lived and raised their family in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts Bay Province
