Jacob Barney was born in 1601 in England. He was possibly the son of Edward Barney of Braddenham, Bucks, England. His wife’s name was Elizabeth and she survived him. He was a tailor. He is listed on the manifest of the Lyon.  The Lyon left Bristol, Thames, Gravesend, England on 5 April 1629 along with five other ships. It arrived in Salem late May or June 1629. The ship’s master was William Pierce. Jacob is mentioned as “ Barney, Jacob, of Braddenham, county Bucks bound for Salem.” He was definitely in Salem in 1634.
He became a freeman on 14 May 1634.He is listed in the members of Salem Church before the end of 1636. He was a Representative in 1635-38; 1647-53. He is known for opposing the sentence of the General Court against those who petitioned for freer franchise. He must have been more liberal than others at that time. On 2 February 1639, at a town meeting, he was granted fifty acres of meadow. He was granted another fifty acres of meadow on 28 January 1650. In 1652, he sold land to John Hardy, the land was near Cold Spring at the head of South River Essex Count, MA. He is found in the records of Salem to be an appraiser of estate. He serves a tithingman 7 July 1644. Jacob was also a selectman 1654-1657. He was on the committee to lay out highway 10 Jul 1650 and surveyor of bridges 7 July 1644. He also served on the first grand jury of the country. He died on 28 April 1673 at Salem, Essex, MA, aged 72 years.

The estate was administered and inventoried on 2 June 1673. It totalled £655 3s. 8d.,  which £462 was real estate: seven acres salt marsh, £42; five acres meadow called Bishop's Meadow, £5; 250 acres land, £360; five acres meadow called Bunker Meadow, £20; dwelling house, barn and cowhouse, £26; and 68 rods in Salem, £9. On 24 June 1673 administration on the estate of Jacob Barney was granted to Eliza[beth] the widow and Jacob the son. On 28 June 1673 the heirs entered into an agreement on the distribution of the estate; after provision for the widow, all the lands and housing were to go to Jacob Barney "the only son of Jacob Barney," except for the "small parcel in the town of Salem," which was to go to John Cromwell; "whereas Jacob Barne's sister died and left one son and three daughters, viz. John Grover, Hannah Grover, Sarah Grover and Abigall Grover, their said uncles Jacob Barne and John Cromwell" are to provide for them [ EPR 2:359-61]

"Most of the family is buried on a knoll on their farm on the north, between the cedar swamp and the river, about a half southwest from Miller's Bridge."

Joseph was a farmer. He was also a lieutenant in the militia... It is felt that he may have lived some years in Newport about 1670 where he and Constance were members of the First Sabbatarian Church. Later he moved to Rehoboth in 1690. He was a constable in 1696. He also served as s selectman 1719/20 He represented Rehoboth in Colonial Legislature. His will was dated 29 Aug 1728 and proved 16 Feb 1730/1

“Some records show another marriage to a "Joanna" 22 Jan 1729-30 at Barrington. This last marriage is listed as his 3rd wife. The ref. for this wife is found: "Barney Record Book" Bk 1, p 23.  notes show that he md. (2) Joanna Kent (no issue); md. (3) Mary Toogood.”

“Jacob Barney and his sons bought a tract of land, said to have been a mile square, in Rehoboth, lying upon the west side of Palmer's River and upon both sides of Torrey's Creek near the Swansea line. To this plantation Joseph Barney brought his young wife, Constance (Davis) from Haverhill. In this connection there can be hardly a doubt but that their first acquaintance was formed while both were living with their parents at Salem and Haverhill, respectively -- not distant neighbors in that time. Upon the northerly part of this farm Joseph and Constance (Davis) Barney lived and brought up a family as did their descendants, for two or more generations after them. Even yet upon a knoll between the cedar swamp and river on the old place are to be seen the grave mound of the family marked by rough head-stones, of which only one bears a legible inscription. "Anna, wife of Jacob Sanders, youngest daughter of Joseph and Constance Barney, died 1760, aged 47 years." On Sept. 4, 1719, Joseph and Constance united in fellowship with the First Baptist Church of Swansea, and were exemplay members thereof while they lived."
