They also tried to set up a colony and fishery at Pascataqua River. They divided the grant between them in 1629.William Raymond became involved in Mason’s new association called “The Company of Laconia”, William Raymond, Ambrose Gibbons were two of the stewards and forty servants who were sent to Little Harbor, Portsmouth, NH.

In Dec 15, 1632, Mason and men of the association wrote to Gibbons in London:
“Wee thank you for assisting John Raymond. Wee pray you still to helpful to him so that he may dispatch and come to us with such retourne as he hath and if he hath any of his trade goods remaining unsold wee have willed him to leave them with you and we doe hereby pray you to receive them into your custody and to put them off with what convenience you may and to send us the retournes by the firs ship comes.”

Again Gibbons write to the company at London from Newichwanick, on 13 July 1633:
“I have taken into my hands all the trade goods that remains of John Raymon’s and Mr. Vaughan and will with what convenience I may put them of. George Vaughan hath a note of all the trade goods in my custody of the old store John Raymonds and George Vaughns accomtes, nut the bever being disposed of before I could make a devident.”

John Raymond in a letter to Ambrose Gibbons of Newichawannock:
“John Barcraste owes me for 1 barr. Of pease and six gallons of aqua, seven pounds of bever which I pray take notice of, ad call in as the rest of the debts accordingly.”

Around 1648, William (Captain) and John are found at Salem, Essex, MA and Beverly, Essex, MA. The proof of the brother’s relationship is found on a deed of record in the Salem Registry, Book 17, page 24. In it John Raymond, Middleboro, Plymouth, MA, the son of John the emigrant, gives an estate to his brother, Jonathan. The boundary is described as:
“until it comes to the land which I sold to my uncle Capt. William Rayment and to his son George Rayment.”

On 7 June 1664 William Dodge, John Raymond, Roger Conant, Benjamin Balch, and Peter Woodbury of Bass River in Salem gave to Isaac Hull, cooper,
"for considerations moving us thereunto" one acre each, totaling five acres near Great Pond.

John is most likely the John of Middleboro, that is mentioned as the first Soldier to enter the Fort in the Narragansett fight, in December of 1675. He was not living in Middleboro at that time. 19 July 1675, there was a conflict at Pocasset. King Phillip escaped and the war continued. On December 1675, there was a fierce battle in Rhode Island, John Raymond, later of Middleboro, took part.
John was a soldier in King Phillip’s War. John is found on a list at the Garrison at Brookfield or “Quabaug” on 24 June 1676; listed John Rayman 01 00 00. He is also credited under Capt. John Whipple of Ipswich on the same date John Rayment 03 00 00. Again he is listed in 24 August 1676 in Beverly-Town Cr. By Sundry Accept viz. John Rayment 03 11 00.
The family moved to Middleboro, Plymouth, MA after 1692. John and his brothers, Thomas and Jonathan are listed in the local militia for the town of Middleborough. John is also listed as one of many purchase of land from Jacob Soule on 30 March 1717 for the parish burying-ground.

From the History of the Town of Middleborough p. 335:
Raymond Neighborhood
“In the change of population, this place has, with the past fifty years, lost much of its significance. It is situated between Waterville, and Thomastown, and although in the early settlement its soil was productive, it is now one of the poorest and most uninviting parts of the won. A hundred years ago its population was quite numerous. They were the descendants of John Raymond, who came from Salem during the witchcraft excitement. While a resident of Salem, he early enlisted in King Philips’s War in the company commanded by Captain Joseph Gardner and was one of the bravest and most efficient men in his command. He was in the great battle at the taking of the Indian fort in the Narragansett country on the afternoon of Sunday, December 19, 1675, and is said to have been the first soldier who entered the fortification. After this campaign, he continued in various commands until the close of the war. He united the First Church, April 29, 1722, and was a worthy, devoted Christian, a man of much influence, commanding the respect of all. He died July 5, 1725, in the seventy-seventh year of his age. Some of his descendants with other residents of Middleboro, moved to Woodstock, Vermont.”

  1. Hi,
Your blog came up as I was looking into Capt John Raymond. Your info is very helpful! I've traced my fathers family back to Amos Raymond, listed as the second child of Thomas (your 3rd generation!) It's amazing to see how we're all connected!!

And also amazing to see our US history! My dad grew up in Toronto and it looks like Amos's grandson Solomon moved to Canada around 1800. I never new there was a US connection.

Just thought I'd let you know! Good luck with more searching!
