Robert Hicks came to New England on the Fortune in 1621. His wife and three of the children came later on the Anne in 1623. He had been a fellmonger, or leatherseller and lived on Bermondsey Street in Southwark, England. The first eight children were baptized at St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey, England. Robert was a freeman by 1633 at Plymouth. He served as an arbiter, appraiser, and rater for taxes in 1633-34. He was part of a committee for dividing meadow land about this time as well. His wife, Margaret was educated. She could sign her name and in his will Samuel Fuller requested "when my daughter Mercy is fitt to goe to scole that mrs Heeks may teach her as well as my sonne." It is thought she taught others, too.

Samuel Hicks came to America with his mother Margaret on the ship "Ann" to meet father, Robert, who had come previously on the "Fortune". Samuel was at Plymouth 1643 and able to bear arms. He went to Nausett and was constable 1646. Representative to Colony Court 1647 and 1649 with Mr. Doane. Was in Eastham for a short time. Was resident of Barnstable as late as 16?2.
